Saks Welwyn Garden City review

Having not had my hair cut in over three months I thought it was time I went and had myself a trim. I decided to try Saks in Welwyn Garden City as it was my local and everyone at work was raving on about its service and reasonable price. I am quite generous when it comes to beauty and I will pay up to £150 for a good haircut. Saks cost me around £47 for a haircut with a senior stylist; it was quite disappointing as because it was near the end of the day she was uninterested and boring.

After explaining that I wanted a simple bob with bangs down the side she still cut it too short and it looked really old fashioned. When it was time to put in a few layers the scissors were blunt so it felt like my hair was being ripped out. The salon itself it quite small and run down, the lady on reception was very friendly and helpful, but staff seemed really distracted and inefficient. After the stylist had finished I went to pay and was given over £50 worth of money off vouchers for my next haircut, I distributed them amongst my work colleagues.

Before choosing Saks I did read a few reviews but like always you don’t really know what to expect until you go and see for yourself. There may be other Saks salons out there that have professional, competent staff that really know what they are doing but the one in Welwyn Garden City just doesn’t have a clue. Remember that if you are an NHS employee you can get a discount, for example on your first visit you can get 50% off and 20% on visits after. You may be tempted by such offers but in some cases you get what you pay even if it is 50% off. Tesco employees are also entitled to a discount at Saks.

Saks has become well known since Andrew Barton has appeared in shows such as 10 years younger, Ready Steady Cook, GMTV and LK today so after seeing some of the transformations he has participated in you feel that they are providing a good service. The best thing to do is to try out a few of you local salons and decide for yourself to avoid disappointment, when visiting a new salon go for a simple trim until you decide to change your hairstyle.

Having been to many different salons this was probably the worst haircut and experience I’ve ever had!

DermaSponge Review

After years of severe acne as a child I was still left with scarring and large pores as an adult. The best advice my mum gave me as a child was not to pick my spots if I leave them they’ll go away. Mother does know best but I had other ideas, every time a new spot appeared I had to pick it. Now as an adult in my mid twenties I still have large pores for picking my spots too much.

Awhile ago I discovered DermaSponge in the back of a magazine it is a sponge embedded with oxide aluminium crystals, the same ones found in the salon machines when you go for a microdermabrasion treatment.

How was my experience with DermaSponge?

Well they advise you to buff the skin in small circular motions for like two minutes or so but advise less time for sensitive skin, As I was very eager to try it I rubbed it really hard for two minutes, it was like rubbing sandpaper against my face. After my two minutes were up my face was red raw and really sensitive. I used the soothing gel that came with the sponges and it made my face burn even more so I just used baby Johnson’s. When I went to sleep at night I was in excruciating pain and my face kept sticking to the pillows. After a restless night of trying to sleep I awoke to find my skin peeling and really tight. I tried not to pick the dry skin as read somewhere that it could leave scars.

It’s now a few days later and after intense moisturising and facial saunas the results are fantastic! My skin is smoother and even, my scars are gone and my open pores are no more. I truly recommend this product as it has saved my potentially thousands of pounds worth of facials, chemical skin peels and laser surgery.

The starter pack contains four sponges so I have 3 more to go I will do it on a Friday so I can heal over the weekend as I found it rather embarrassing going to work with a scabby face, I will update as soon as I have used the next sponge.

Fake tan!

When out shopping the number of times I have seem tangoed men and women are hilarious. The funniest and most embarrassing is when women get fake tan over their legs only to forget about the ankles and feet, and on top of that decide its ok to wear a short skirt and flip flops. Another embarrassing mistake is having orange hands and not even bothering to cover them up.

Exercise machines

A while ago there was a really good offer for a toning disc in Avon. I thought I’d give it a try because it was easy exercise; it only cost me £10. I used it everyday starting at five minutes each evening, then increasing it to about fifteen minutes at a time. I don’t know if it made me any slimmer, but I could feel the workout afterwards. I’m not sure why I stopped it may have been because I got bored, even though it was cheap and I did it while watching TV. I have also tried the gym ball once then got rid of it I can’t honestly say it worked because I didn’t use it long enough.

Having had a Wii console for over a year when the Wii Fit came out I was one of the first in line. I used it everyday after work for twenty minutes and lost up to 4lbs in a week. The results were fantastic but then the weather changed and we were in winter so I stopped. I would thoroughly recommend the Wii Fit as it worked for me and there are a choice of exercises available.

During the summer months I tried using weights to tone my arms, strengthen my back and tone my thighs and stomach. It was well worth it I did tone up and the compliments at work were very encouraging. As I did the weights outside with my family during the winter its too cold so I stopped.

As I am probably the most laziest in the world I have decided to join my local gym. At £50 a month I hope it will be money well spent and I’m hoping that the fact I have to pay every month will motivate me to go 5 days a week. I have just booked a tour with my local gym and if it looks good then I’ll give it a try. If  I was to do pay as you go I would still have to pay £50 a year membership but also a hefty £5.50 every time I would go. I am hopeful that going to the gym is the right thing to and having recently spent over£200 on gym clothes my husband would be quite angry if I didn’t at least give it a go instead of complaining all the time.

Charitable beauty

There are many brands on the market today be it cosmetics or Christmas cards that have an incentive of donating money to charity. It makes people feel better when they buy something that will also help others in return. There are shops that supply hand made cards made by people raising money for charities; they are more personal and unique because they haven’t been mass-produced.

Cosmetics are also doing the same thing buy purchasing their products they give a percentage or fixed amount to a chosen charity.

Retailers are selling ethically produced cotton clothing, when clothes are purchased all profit made go to the workers who picked cotton from the fields and the seamstress who sew the pieces together.

You can even buy fair-trade products like tea; coffee and chocolate just remember to look for the official logo.

Just recently I have found that if you buy a chicken coop from a certain company and are adopting battery hens they will donate £20 to the battery hens welfare trust, I don’t know if this is true and if you can trust them but it doesn’t cost anything to donate money yourself.

Foot surgery for perfect feet

With more and more people opting for surgery to correct flaws and improve appearance I’m not surprised that you can even have feet corrected to fit better in pretty sandals and shoes. Although not for the squeamish and recovery time can be weeks to months all who have had it, do not regret it the results. I would go crazy if I had to use crutches for longer than a couple of days so you can count me out on this bizarre procedure.

We all know we can have surgery to correct bunions and hammer toes but having your toes shortened and made longer is just crazy. Most models and celebrities won’t admit to it but it’s estimated that around 40% of celebrities have had this procedure done. You can even get the bones in your foot shaved to appear longer and leaner and fit more comfotably in stilettos.

Like I said recovery time can vary so going without wearing my beautiful Laboutins for more than a few days would be like torture to me!

Teeth whitening

I’ve wanted to have my teeth whitened for years so when I found a good offer read the procedure and any risks associated with it, I booked my appointment.

I had to give a deposit of around £50 just in case I cancelled at the last minute and I also received a home kit so I can a have top up when I want.

I had my gums covered and a retractor placed to protect my cheeks then the gel was placed on each tooth and a laser placed over it. The process is about an hour.

Towards the end I did feel some pain that made my eyes water but in the end it was worth it. I had to avoid hot food, cold food and anything that would stain my teeth for a little while. I haven’t had any problems with sensitivity or bleeding gums and I am happy.

As everyone is different you can’t have a guaranteed success period. For the first few weeks I was very cautious avoiding coloured food, tea, fizzy drinks etc. After a while you fall back into your old routine and forget all the advice given to you to help preserve the pristine white smile. It’s now been over a year an I feel like I need a top up although many people i know beg to differ. I have spent the last year travelling around the world trying different food and lifestyles and i strongly believe this has contributed to the poor success rate of having a whiter smile.

I plan to get braces to straighten out my bottom teeth then get my teeth whitened again.

Laser eye surgery

After wearing glasses from the age of seven Coleen Rooney (formerly known as Coleen McLoughlin) has finally been able to have laser eye surgery after turning 21 in September 2007. She had two weeks off from work to recover, she said, “I can’t wait to wake up and see properly”. It has now been over a year and she is happy with the results. Having just given birth to a baby boy I’m sure the inconvenience of having to reach for glasses at 3am will be a distant memory.

Its coming up to Christmas and all the companies are releasing offers of cut rate laser eye surgery, I wonder if anyone has taken the plunge yet? Laser eye surgery is on my list of things to do because I travel a lot its a shame I miss out on things like scuba diving, snorkeling and swimming with the dolphins. there are many things to consider before having laser eye surgery and finding a good eye surgeon should be number one priority. Just because Optimax keep sending letters monthly to remind you of the fantastic offers they have shouldn’t push you into taking a decision right now. I personally would like to go to a specialist eyes hospital even if i have to pay double, if anything was to go wrong I know that there would be a team of doctors able to help me. if you were to go to Optimax if anything were to go wrong they would refer you to a hospital so why not go to a eye hospital in the first place?

When i decide to have laser eye surgery I will share my thoughts and experiences but in the mean time I don’t mind wearing contact lenses even if I’m swimming or snorkeling.

Eating disorders

A few years ago I worked in a health centre that had a team of specialists that worked with people who had eating disorders.

80% of the patients were women but I was very surprised when there were male patients too. There was a patient who once took over 10 minutes to walk up 7 steps, she was so frail, being anorexic aged her by many years. I was sad to find out that she eventually died.

It was nice to see that many people who came to the clinic for eating disorders eventually recovered and put on enough weight to be discharged.

There was a young boy who was about 16 years old, he was very tall but very emaciated, his face was sunken in and he was very pale. I was so sure that he wouldn’t live very long. After a few months he was a completely different person, he was smiling, talkative and no longer withdrawn.

It has since been 4 years since I worked there and the problem is only getting worse, there are too many young people who watch TV and believe what they see. Not everyone in Hollywood is a size zero; most won’t admit it but magazines, film posters and features are all airbrushed to perfection.

Don’t always believe what you see, it’s not worth killing yourself over.

Temporary boob job with Macrolane

For the past year my friend Jane has been nagging her husband to let her have her breasts enlarged. Saying this I know she doesn’t need it. She already has a 34D and showing no signs of stopping. Like all women we all hate our bodies no matter how perfect our partners say we are as we don’t believe them.

So after reading about Macrolane Jabe thought maybe she should give it a go. If she doesn’t like it then after a year or so she will be back to her natural size. The reviews have been good but unless she tries for herself, she will never know.

She is quite fortunate not to have to think twice before paying £2,600 for them to be temporarily bigger, but for another £1000 she could have results that are permanent.

If you’re not fortunate enough to blow near enough £3000 for a temporary boob job, I’d advise you to have a permanent one.
