Britain’s first successful eyelash transplant has taken place. Although this transplant surgery has been popular and widely available in the US, this has only just been performed now in the UK. During the procedure, hair is taken from the back of the head and grafted onto the eyelid and in time the hair transplanted will thicken. The surgery itself takes around 4 hours to complete at a cost of £3,500.
Though the patient (19 year old Louise Thomas) suffers from trichotillomania which is an impulsive condition causing sufferers to pull out or pluck out their eyelashes, eyelash transplant surgery can also help alopecia sufferers and cancer patients who have lost hair through no fault of their own.
The downside to eyelash transplant surgery is because the eyelashes were transplanted, they do not fall out naturally; therefore they will need to be trimmed every six weeks.
Another eyelash enhancement treatment soon to be as popular in the UK as it is in the US is Latisse. Latisse is a new ointment that was originally used to treat glaucoma; the ointment is said to make eyelashes grow longer and thicker.
